What are the differences between hydrophilic and hydrophobic PES membranes?

Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes are widely used in various industries due to their excellent chemical resistance, high mechanical strength, and thermal stability. Hydrophilic PES membranes generally have better fouling resistance compared to hydrophobic PES membranes, especially in aqueous systems. Their low protein adsorption and high biocompatibility make them suitable for handling biological samples without causing significant damage to the biomolecules.

Their water – repellent property allows them to operate in humid environments without being affected by water condensation.
  • Chemical Industry: In the chemical industry, hydrophobic PES membranes are used for the filtration of organic solvents and the separation of chemical compounds. They can withstand the harsh chemical environment and provide high – efficiency filtration.

5. Manufacturing Process

The manufacturing processes of hydrophilic and hydrophobic PES membranes also differ. Hydrophilic PES membranes are usually produced by modifying the surface of a base PES membrane. This can be done through physical or chemical methods. Physical methods include plasma treatment, which can introduce polar functional groups on the membrane surface. Chemical methods involve grafting hydrophilic polymers onto the membrane surface or using chemical agents to react with the membrane surface and introduce hydrophilic groups.
